Moving the Deduplication Database (DDB) When the MediaAgent Hosting the DDB is Online

You can manually move a deduplication database (DDB) from one MediaAgent to another MediaAgent even if the MediaAgent on which the DDB resides is online. Use this method when a faster DDB moving mechanism is available at your disposal.

Note

If a DDB partition contains an active store and sealed stores, moving an active store does not move the sealed stores. You must move each sealed store separately using the DDB move operation.

Before You Begin

  • Verify that the DDB partition contains data. You cannot move an empty DDB partition.
To move an empty DDB partition, see Recovering Permanently Offline Deduplication Database Partitions.

  • Verify that DDB backup operation or DDB reconstruction operation is not running for the storage policy copy that is associated with the DDB that you want to move.

  • Verify that the destination MediaAgent has at least 5% more free space to host the DDB.

Procedure

  1. Stop the services on both the source and the destination MediaAgents.

For instructions, see Controlling Commvault Services on Clients.

  2. From the CommCell Browser, go to Storage Resources > Deduplication Engines > storage_policy_copy.

  3. Right-click the DDB that you want to move, and then click All Tasks > Move Partitions.

The Move Partition dialog box appears.

  4. For the DDB partition that you want to move, in the Target MediaAgent And Partition Path column, click Choose Path.

  5. From the MediaAgent list, select the destination MediaAgent.

  6. In the Partition Path, enter the path where you want to move the partition.

Do not move the partition to the software installation directory.

  7. In the Change Config only column, select the check box.

    Note

The next deduplication database (DDB) verification job will automatically convert to a full DDB verification job.

  8. Click OK.

A message indicates that the process to move the partitions changes the path only in the CommServe database.

  9. Click OK.

A confirmation popup appears for suspending the active jobs on the DDB.

  10. Do one of the following:

    • To automatically suspend any active jobs and proceed with the move operation, click Yes.

The suspended jobs resume after the move operation completes.

    • To avoid suspension of any active jobs, click No.

The move operation proceeds only if there are no active jobs. You can proceed with move operation only after the active jobs are suspended or completed.

After successful completion of the move operation, a message appears in the Event Viewer window.

  11. On the source MediaAgent, navigate to the current DDB partition location.

  12. Copy the CV_SIDB directory that contains the partition files.

Do not copy the icl_label file. The software automatically creates this file in the destination location.

  13. Paste the CV_SIDB directory in the destination location on the destination MediaAgent.

  14. After the successful move of the directory, restart the services on both the source MediaAgent and the destination MediaAgent.

For instructions, see Controlling Commvault Services on Clients.

  15. Verify that the partitions you moved are in online status.

For instructions to verify the status, see Monitoring the Deduplication Database Partitions.

  16. On the source MediaAgent, manually delete the CV_SIDB directory.
