HyperScale Edge Standard Configuration Workflow (Automated / DHCP)

Use the Standard workflow when:

  • DHCP is available
  • The node uses a single network uplink
  • No custom network settings are required

In this workflow, the Edge node temporarily uses a DHCP-assigned IP address to authenticate with the Commvault Cloud. After authentication, the system applies the static IP defined in the Device Registration.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure the following:

  • Physical or remote console access to the HyperScale Edge node
  • DHCP services are available on the connected network
  • Access to Commvault Cloud (SaaS)
  • Default HyperScale Edge node login credentials
  • The hardware serial number of the Edge node

Procedure

Step 1: Create a Device Registration and Storage Pool (Command Center)

  1. In Command Center, go to Storage > Disk.
  2. Select the HyperScale Edge tab.
  3. Click Add, and then click Setup Storage Pool.
  4. On the Storage Pool & System Details page, enter:
    • Storage pool name – A unique name for the HyperScale Edge storage pool.
    • System serial number – The hardware serial number of the Edge node.
    • Time zone – The time zone where the node is deployed.
  5. On the Cloud Connection Details page:
    1. Select Standard.
    2. Enter the static network details to be applied after authentication:
    3. Node IP Address: The static IP address assigned to the HyperScale Edge node. This IP address must:
      • Be reachable from the Commvault Cloud environment.
      • Not conflict with any existing IP address in the network.
    4. Network Mask: The subnet mask associated with the node IP address. This defines the network segment to which the node belongs.
    5. Gateway: The default gateway for the node. This gateway must:
      • Allow outbound communication to Commvault Cloud.
      • Be correctly configured to route traffic outside the local subnet.
    6. DNS 1: Primary DNS server IP address. This server must resolve:
      • Commvault Cloud endpoints
      • Required external services
    7. DNS 2 (Optional): Secondary DNS server for redundancy.
    8. DNS 3 (Optional): Additional DNS server if required by your environment.
    9. VLAN Tag (Optional): Specify a VLAN ID if the node’s network interface is connected to a tagged VLAN. Leave this field blank if VLAN tagging is not required.
  6. On the Credentials page, set different passwords for:
    • Root password
    • cvbackupadmin password
  7. Review the summary and click Submit.

After submission, the storage pool status is Awaiting device.

Step 2: Install and Authenticate the Edge Node

  1. Power on the Edge node and log in as the root user.
  2. The software automatically runs the hssetup utility to start installation.
  3. If DHCP is available, the system automatically configures temporary networking.
  4. When network initialization completes, the Authenticating Device screen appears and displays:

    • A registration URL
    • A time-limited verification code
    • A QR code

QR Code is a shortcut to the Device Registration page.

  5. In Commvault Cloud:

    1. Go to the Device Registration page.
    2. Click Verify.
    3. Enter the verification code.

Results

After verification:

  • Installation resumes without further user input.
  • The Edge node authenticates with the Commvault Cloud.
  • The system applies the static IP defined in Device Registration.
  • The Edge node registers with the Commvault Cloud.
  • The storage pool is created automatically.

When installation is completed, the node status changes to Online (deployed).

The storage pool is displayed on the Storage > Disk page, where you can view its configuration and health status.
