Commvault Flex Open is a deployment model built on VaultOS that follows a familiar Commvault MediaAgent-style architecture. It can be deployed as a single-node system for smaller environments or as a multi-node design for larger deployments that need more throughput, resilience, or scale. In both cases, the nodes can grow over time, similar to how Flex Appliance scales by adding nodes, but without the appliance-specific hardware constraints.
At the core of Flex Open, each node combines the main Commvault roles into one platform, including the MediaAgent, Access Node, Index Server, and Threat Analysis functions. This consolidation reduces infrastructure sprawl while still supporting the full backup, recovery, indexing, and cyber-resilience workflow. Flex Open can use internal storage or external storage, depending on the customer’s design. The platform supports a wide range of storage types, including DAS, NAS, block storage, S3, tape, Data Domain, and StoreOnce, so it fits environments that already have existing storage standards or multi-tier backup architectures.
Flex Open is therefore best described as a standard Commvault MediaAgent architecture modernized with VaultOS, where customers can start small with a single node and expand to a multi-node deployment as capacity and performance needs grow. It offers flexibility in hardware and storage choice, while keeping the operational model aligned with normal Commvault backup architecture patterns.
