Excluding GCP Resources With Labels from Protection and Recovery

You can exclude resources from protection using resource labels and manage the exclusion of unprotected disks during the recovery process. This helps you to have precise control over protected and recovered resources, ensuring that unnecessary and non-critical resources are excluded in advance.

Note

You can exclude only VM Instances, disks, and cloud SQL instances.

You can choose to exclude resources tagged with labels in the following scenarios:

  • Selective protection: Tag labels for resources that you do not want to protect in temporary storage, test environments, or resources with short lifecycles. This reduces backup costs and optimizes recovery strategies.

  • Efficient recovery: Excluding unprotected disks from recovery allows you to streamline the recovery process and focus on bringing back only essential workloads. This help you to save time and storage during the recovery process.

Capabilities

  • Excluding resources from protection

    • Detects resources that are tagged with specified labels and automatically removes the resources, along with any dependent ones, from the protection workflow if they have a matching label.

    • Allows flexibility to manage resources by using labels to focus on protecting high-priority assets and filtering out non-essential ones.

  • Exclude unprotected disks from recovery

    • Automatically exclude unprotected disks when recovering Virtual Machines (VMs). Disks excluded using labels will not be recovered, ensuring only protected resources are restored. This reduces recovery time and resource use.

    • Useful in environments where not all attached disks are essential for a VM's operation. For instance, temporary or scratch disks can be excluded, focusing recovery on critical data disks only.

    • If an excluded disk is a boot disk, abort the VM from recovery.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation menu, go to Cloud Resilence > Cloud Assemblies.

  2. Click the GCP Cloud assembly for which you want to exclude resources from.
The Cloud Assembly page for GCP appears.

  3. In the top-right corner of the page, click Actions, and then select Edit. The Edit Cloud Assembly page for GCP appears.

  4. On the Resources page, in the top-right corner, click Edit.

  5. For cloud resource protection type, go to Selected Using Resources or Select Using Labels, move the Exclude resources with following labels toggle key to the right, add the labels to exclude resources that match the specified label.

  6. Click Submit.
