Amazon DocumentDB and Amazon Neptune policies

DocumentDB and Neptune each have their own policy type, separate from the RDS policy. A DocumentDB policy protects DocumentDB clusters and a Neptune policy protects Neptune clusters. Each policy defines when a backup of your clusters should be generated and how long the backup data should be retained.

SecureVault Archive tier is not supported for DocumentDB or Neptune; only SecureVault Standard is available. If a DocumentDB or Neptune resource is protected by a policy that includes SecureVault Archive tier, a corresponding alert is generated to indicate that SecureVault Archive is not a supported tier for these resources.

Create a DocumentDB or Neptune policy

DocumentDB policies and Neptune policies are created separately. The steps below apply to both — select the appropriate asset type in step 3 to determine which policy you are creating.

  1. Navigate to Protect > Backup policies. Click Create. The Create policy wizard appears.

  2. Type a name for the new policy.

  3. From the Add asset types drop down menu, select DocumentDB to create a DocumentDB policy, or Neptune to create a Neptune policy. To protect both resource types, create one policy of each.

  4. On the Configure DocumentDB or Configure Neptune screen, select frequency and retention options.

  5. On the Additional options panel, do the following:

  6. You can choose to specify a window of time when the backups can take place. Select the Start time checkbox and specify the time zone and start and end times of the backup window. If you don't select specific times, the backup window is for 24 hours. You can also choose to select just the start time for when backups should be taken, as end time is optional.

  7. Select SecureVault Standard as the tier to store your backups. SecureVault Archive is not supported for DocumentDB or Neptune.

  8. Choose a backup destination to store your backups. In-region backups are kept in the same region as the asset being backed up. If you select a different region than the asset being backed up (out-of-region) to store your backups, additional AWS transfer fees may apply.

  9. Review your selections on the Create policy page. You can add new or modify existing asset types. You can also modify the Additional options you selected.

  10. Click Save to save the policy and have it display on the Backup policies page.

Next, create a protection rule to apply the policy you just created to your DocumentDB or Neptune resources. See Managing protection rules for more information.

Modify a DocumentDB or Neptune policy

You can modify a policy from the Create policy screen of the wizard before you save it, or later from the Backup policies page.

To modify a policy, click the modify icon.

Delete a DocumentDB or Neptune policy

Deleting a policy will not affect any backups that have been generated by the policy in the past. Deleted policies cannot be recovered. A policy cannot be deleted if it is protecting workloads. Before you delete a policy, remove it from all of the data sources to which it is applied.

To delete a policy, click the delete icon.
