Setting the Timeout Durations to Support LTO9 Drive Characterization

Updated

The LTO9 drive contains a new feature called Drive Characterization. Whenever you insert a brand-new LTO9 media into an Ultrium-9 drive for the first time, it automatically begins an initialization process that can last from 20 minutes to 2 hours. The initialization process is a default hardware vendor function. The Commvault software cannot perform any operations to the drive until the initialization process is complete.

The default timeout for mount and unmount operations for a drive in the Commvault software is set to 30 minutes, which is less than the time taken for initialization process. So, the drive will be marked offline after 30 minutes. To increase the default timeout values and allow jobs to wait until initialization completes, you must perform the one-time configurations at the tape library level and the MediaAgent level.

Notes

For some models of tape libraries, you must perform additional steps on the physical tape library before you can use LTO-9 media with the Commvault software. Please contact your hardware vendor to confirm.

Currently, the following models require additional steps:

  • HPE StoreEver MSL2024
  • HPE 1/8 G2 Autoloader

For more information, see LTO-9 Media initialization.

Procedure

  1. For the tape library that contains an LTO9 drive, change the value for Timeout (in Minutes) for both Mount and Unmount operations to 120 minutes from a default value of 30 minutes.

For more information, see Library Properties (General).

  2. Reset the library.

    For instructions, see Reset Library.

  3. For the MediaAgent that hosts the tape library as the drive controller, add the LOAD additional setting as follows. For instructions, see Adding an Additional Setting from the CommCell Console.
