TapeTool - Windows

You can use the TapeToolGui to troubleshoot media in the library and run performance testing on the mounted media.

Use the TapeToolGui to perform the following functions:

  • Read and write data to the media

  • Read the On Media Label (OML)

  • Read the tape marks

  • Format the media

  • Set the tape tension

  • Copy the media

  • Unload the media

The TapeToolGui is also available as a command line interface. For more information, see TapeTool - Windows Command Line.

Procedure

  1. From the <software installation path>\Base folder and run the TapeToolGui.exe.

  2. Choose how you want to transfer the data from under the Transfer Mode section.

  3. Choose the appropriate tape location.

    If the tape library is on a local drive, select Local.

    If the tape library is on a filer, under Parameters, enter details about the filer.

  4. If the tape library is on a filer, you will be able to perform only the following functions:

  5. Under Tape Operations, select the appropriate operation and set the corresponding parameters.

  6. Click Start to run the applicable action.

    The result is displayed in the Operations Results field.

  7. Click Exit to close the application.

Reading the Media

Select the Read option to read the information from the tape directory and then specify the following options:

Description

Block Size (KB)

The block size set when the tape was formatted.

File Mark Start

The location of the file mark where the read begins.

File Mark End

The location of the file mark where the read ends.

Enable Dump to File

A dump program backs up the information from the source.
The software creates the dump in the folder that you select. The size of the dump is equal to the size of the data stored on the tape.
Reading the Media Label

Select the Read Label option to read the label information from the tape and then specify the following options:

Block Size (KB)

The block size set when the tape was formatted.
Writing on the Tape

Select the Write option to write data to a specific tape. Then specify the following options:

File Name

(Optional) The fully qualified name of the file to be written to the tape.

File Mark

The number specifying the location on the tape where the file is to be written.

Data Size

(Optional) The amount of data, in megabytes, to be stored on the tape.

Chunk Size

(Optional) The size of the data chunk used to write data on the tape.

Block Size

(Optional) The size of the blocks of data to be stored on the tape.

Enable Compression

Compresses data when written to the tape.
Formatting the Tape

Select the Format option to format a specific tape and then specify the following options:

Copying from One Tape to Another Tape

Select the Copy option to transfer data from one tape to another and then specify the following options:

Source Tape

Name of the tape from which you want to transfer the data.

Target Tape

Name of the tape to which you want to transfer the data.

Start File Mark

(Optional) Location of the file mark where the read begins.

Block Size (KB)

(Optional) Size of the blocks of data to be stored on the tape.

Read Buffer

(Optional) Buffer size for reading data form the target tape.
Reading a Disk

Select the Disk Read option to read the contents from the hard disk and write to the tape library. Specify the following options:

For Source Data, depending on the file type that you want to write to the tape library, choose from one of the following options. The selected file or directory will be read from the hard disk and written to the tape device. :

COL file generated by Galaxy

A collect file records the path and the name of each scanned file that requires backup or archiving. Go to C:\Program Files\Software Installation Directory \iDataAgent\JobResults\CV_JobResults\iDataAgent\FileSystemAgent\2\ and select the collect file.

Read directory path recursively

Directory in which files are read from the hard disk and to the tape device.

List of drives in the file

File on a specific drive.

For Target Tape option, specify the following options for the tape destination:

Name of the tape.

Chunksize

(Optional) The size, in MB, of the data chunk used to write data to the tape.

Block Size

(Optional) The size of the data blocks to be stored on the tape.

File Mark

(Optional) Number of the location on the tape where the file is to be written.

Compression

Compresses data when written to the tape.
