You can analyze file server data by adding file servers as data sources in bulk. You can analyze both protected and unprotected data.
Note: The approach mentioned on this page is applicable to file servers (Windows, UNIX, and NAS) and endpoints.
Before You Begin

Gather the information that applies to the filer servers that you want to add as data sources.

If you are analyzing data that was backed up, decide whether you want to perform a quick scan or a full scan.

If you are analyzing data that is not backed up and the operating system of the data source differs from the operating system of the Index Server, then the operating system of the access node must match the operating system of the data source and must have a Commvault package installed. For example, if you want to analyze a UNC share, but the Index Server is on a Linux computer, you must use a Windows computer as the access node.

If your file system data source is a Windows computer or a NetApp filer, you can enable monitoring so that all users who accessed, modified, deleted, or renamed a file are captured. Modifying a file includes creating and changing a file. Before you enable monitoring, see the considerations for file monitoring.
Procedure

From the navigation pane, go to Data Insights.
The Data Insights page appears.

Under Risk Analysis, click File storage optimization.
The File storage optimization page appears.

Click the Data Sources tab.
Data sources for File Storage Optimization appear.

Click Add, and then select Add manually.
The Add data sources page appears.

In the inventory list dropdown, select an inventory to which you want to add data sources.
Note
By default, the system default inventory is selected.

On the right of the page, click Add, and then select Multiple.
The Add multiple dialog box appears.

For Rows to be added, enter the number of file server data sources that you want to add.

To select a file server to associate with the data sources, from the Server name list, select a file server.

To select an access node to associate with the data sources, from the Access node list, select an access node.

If you are using Windows share, for User name and Password, enter the credentials.

To specify a source path, for Source path, enter the source path to the data you want to analyze.

From the Data classification plan list, select a data classification plan.

Click Submit.
