This procedure describes the general steps for creating a backup operation.
Before You Begin

Decide which type of backup is appropriate.

To perform backups on an On-Demand subclient, you must have created an On-Demand backup set in the CommCell Console. See Creating an On-Demand Backup Set for Windows File System for more information.

Plan your advanced backup options. The options are described for the following advanced settings.

Plan whether you will run the backup immediately or on a schedule.

Determine whether you want to save your backup options as a script to run from a command line interface.

Review the components that are backed up by using the Windows File System Agent. For more information, see Components Backed Up by the Windows File System Agent.

Certain files found during the scan phase might be missing during backup. By default, the backup job skips these missing files during backup so that these files are not counted as failed objects. However, if you do not want these missing files skipped during backup, enable the nDoNotSkipMissingFilesOnBackupadditional setting. Additionally, these missing files will be counted as failed objects.

Between backup jobs with recursive scan selected, if a folder is deleted and another folder is renamed to the same name, and if the file modified time (mtime), changed time (ctime), or the state of the archive bit did not change, then the next incremental or differential backup job does not back up the contents of the renamed folder. To back up the renamed folder, we recommend to enable the Reconcile Backup option from the subclient properties.
Procedure

From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client.

Choose the type of subclient to backup:

To back up all subclients, right-click backup_set, and then click All Tasks > Backup All Subclients.

To back up a specific subclient, right-click the appropriate subclient, and then click Backup.

To backup a subclient in the On-Demand backup set, right-click the subclient, and then click Backup.
The Backup Options dialog box is displayed.

In the Select Backup Type area, choose your backup type:

To perform a full backup, select Full.

To perform either an incremental or differential backup, select Incremental or Differential.

In the Job initiation area, define whether the backup job runs immediately or if it will be scheduled.

Optional: To set advanced backup options, click Advanced.

Optional: To run your backup options from a command line interface, click Save As Script.

Click OK.
Notes:

If you choose to run your backup job immediately, you can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller. When the backup has completed, the Job Controller displays Completed.

If you choose to run your backup job based on the defined schedule, the backup job does not start until the time indicated in the Schedule.
Backup Options
Follow Mount Point
When you want to include the mount point and the data that resides in the mount point, make the following selections:

In the Backup Options dialog box:

In the Select Backup Type area, select Full.

In the Job initiation area, select Immediate.

In the Advanced Options dialog box:
- Select the Follow Mount Points check box.
Notes:
-
When backups are run from multiple nodes on clustered file systems, the same content is backed up multiple times. Backups must be run on only one node to avoid duplicate content backups. Although, the other nodes can also be configured to run backups, make sure that the clustered file system mount point is added to the file system exclusion list of the physical machine's subclients. For the VERITAS Cluster File System, the clustered file system mount point is added automatically to the file system exclusion list when backup is run for the first time on the virtual nodes.

Mount points are restored as folders when you perform an out of place restore operation.
