A repository for new or pruned media that are available for use.

secondary storage

Secondary storage refers to backup or archival data moved to a storage media, such as tape media, disk volumes, and so on. See also primary storage.

selective copy

The logical entity in a storage policy used by an auxiliary copy operation to copy full backups that meet the specified criteria, from the primary copy.

sequencing

In GxTail, this is merging the contents of one log file into another log file, so that the timeline across multiple files can be seen without switching back and forth between the files.

service pack

A collection of new features, enhancements to existing features, and enhancements for product stabilization. Each service pack also contains a cumulative set of hotfixes that were released after the previous service pack version. Service packs are available in a 90-day cycle.

Note

The term "service pack" is used in Service Pack 18 and older service packs. The term "feature release" is applicable to Feature Release 19 and newer feature releases.

service provider (SP)

A service provider owns a resource that a user needs, for example, the Web Console is a resource. When a resource owned by the service provider is requested, the user is authenticated with the identity provider (IdP).

SIDB

See single instance database.

sighted library

A disk library that has a barcode reader. See also blind library.

silent install/upgrade

A Unix-based install/upgrade method used to enter responses to installation prompts directly into an auto-response file to install software faster and unattended.

silo storage

A feature that allows you to store deduplicated data on secondary storage devices for long-term retention at offsite locations.

single instance database (SIDB)

Another name for the deduplication database (DDB). See deduplication database.

size on media

Size of deduplicated data written on the media.

SLA

An abbreviation of Service-Level Agreement. As used in Commvault, SLA is an expected standard of data protection coverage for a client computer. A client computer meets SLA when all of its subclients and databases are protected by at least one successful full, incremental, differential, or log backup job in a given time range, such as 30 days. SLA is reported as a percentage that indicates the number of client computers that met SLA divided by the total number of client computers.

smart resync

The seamless resumption of replication log replay after an interruption in replication activity. See also replication log replay.

snapshot (GxTail)

A collection of log files in zip format, packaged together with the GxTail context.

snapshot copy

A snapshot copy of the storage policy is an additional copy of the protected data that is used in IntelliSnap operations. The snapshot copy stores the metadata information related to the IntelliSnap feature.

Snapshot Volume Unit (SVU)

A subclient content template that contains a set of specified volumes, and defines subclient content and configuration in a way that is common to a given set of Agents.

staging cache

The temporary update cache location to which a new Service Pack is copied once it is downloaded.

stand-alone drive

Any media device consisting of a single drive unit (for example, tape drive). Storage media must be manually inserted into and removed from these devices, which generally lack media storage capability.

storage policy

A logical entity through which data from a subclient is backed up. A storage policy consists of one or more copies that associate data with a particular physical media.

storage policy copy

A logical entity that provides the path to the backup data and also provides the facility to define the retention period for the data.

stream

In the context of a storage policy, refers to devices or device streams.

streaming backup

A direct copy of data from a client to storage media without intermediary staging (IntelliSnap) or alternate source processing (Synthetic Full). A streaming backup is sometimes referred to as a "regular backup" or a "traditional backup."

stubs

Stubs are files that point to backed up and archived data, functionally similar to a Windows shortcut, Macintosh alias or Unix symbolic link.

stub recovery

Any action that causes an open and read on an object (for example, message or file) that has been archived that starts a recovery operation (not initiated through the CommCell Console) for that object.

subclient

A logical entity that defines specific data on a client computer that will be protected (drives, folders, files, databases, mailboxes, etc.) For more information, see Subclients Overview.

subclient policy

A logical entity through which configuration of multiple file system subclients within a CommCell environment can be accomplished from a centralized template. A subclient policy consists of one or more subclient templates that contain a common configuration that is applied to target subclients within a CommCell environment.

synchronous copy

The logical entity in a storage policy used by auxiliary copy operation to copy backup data occurring on or after a selected date on the primary copy

synthetic full backup

An operation that combines the most recent full backup of the selected data with all subsequent incremental/differential backups and stores the result in a single archive file.

T

tag

System-defined or user-defined custom information that can be assigned to content indexed documents or files in order to categorize them and perform a search based on the tag at a later point of time.

threshold criteria

The threshold criteria of an alert determine at which level the condition within an entity must be reached before an alert is sent. A criterion can be percentage- or value-based. For example, if the threshold criterion is percentage- based with a value of 12% for a Drives Offline alert, then when 12% or more of all the total drives within the entity go offline, an alert notification is sent to a recipient. If the same alert is value-based with a value of 1, then when one or more of all the total drives within the entity go offline, an alert notification is sent.

tracking policies

A tracking policy defines which media is moved, the location where it is moved to and the time that the media is moved.

U

user

Performs software functions allowed by its member user group based on the capabilities of the user group.

user group

A user group is a logical entity through which capabilities are assigned. A user group can administer CommCell environments.

V

verification

See data verification.

virtualization

Virtual Server iDataAgent, Hyper-V backup software, and VMware backup software is a single product that allows you to control all aspects of data management from a single console in virtualized environments for both Hyper-V and VMware. This includes data protection, archive, replication and reporting.

virtualization client

A management unit for each hypervisor, such as VMware, Hyper-V, and RHEV in the CommCell Console. The virtualization client provides a single point of administration for backup and restore operations on the hypervisor. For example, the virtualization client for VMware serves as a single point of administration for the entities managed by the vCenter, including ESX servers, datastores, and virtual machines (VMs).
