Restoring Guest Files and Folders to the Same Amazon EC2 Instance

You can restore files and folders to the same Amazon EC2 instance.

Consider the following:

  • When you restore files from a Linux instance, the file recovery enabler that is specified for the hypervisor is used to recover files. For information, see "Select a FREL" in Updating an Amazon EC2 Hypervisor.

  • For streaming and IntelliSnap backups of Amazon EC2 instances, Commvault indexes guest files and folders of Windows and Linux VMs.

  • Starting with Feature Release 22, for Windows VMs, you can use direct read backups to perform a live browse from the snapshot copy by reading data directly from the snapshots, without the need to create and attach volumes to the access node.

  • If you restore Amazon EC2 guest files, Commvault automatically creates an Amazon S3 bucket for the destination. The bucket name is gx-restore-account_id, where the account_id is the Amazon Web Services account for the virtualization client. This bucket is created only once and is reused. If you want to use a custom bucket, add the AWSbucketForGuestFileRestore entity setting. The custom bucket must have the Object ACL enabled.

  • By default, AWS enables server-side encryption on Amazon S3 buckets using Amazon S3 managed keys. To change the default server-side encryption on Amazon S3 buckets that Commvault creates during agentless restores, add the AWSS3ServerSideEncryptionMethod setting and the AWSS3ServerSideEncryptionKMSKeyId setting on the access node. For a restore that uses the access nodes of a service account, share the KMS key with the member (destination) account.

Before You Begin


  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. Click the VM groups tab.

    The VM group page appears.

  3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button action_button , and then click Restore.

    The Select restore type page appears.

  4. Click Guest files and folders.

    The Restore page appears.

  5. To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:

    1. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.

      The Settings dialog box appears.

    2. For MediaAgent, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the MediaAgent or to specify a MediaAgent:

      • Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.

      • To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.

    3. For Source, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the copy of backup data or to specify the copy:

      • Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.

      • To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.

    4. Click Save.

  6. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

    The Restore options dialog box appears.

  7. On the Select instance tab, in the Instances list, verify that the source instance is selected.

    By default, the source instance is selected.

  8. To use a different VSA access node to perform the restore, from the Access node list, select another access node.

  9. In the Destination path box, enter the destination folder to restore the data to.

  10. To delete an existing file and replace it with the restored file, move the Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists toggle key to the right.

  11. Click Submit.
