Instead of creating a standard network topology, which is comprised of routes from clients in an infrastructure group to all MediaAgents and the CommServe server in the group, you can use a smart network topology, which is comprised of routes from clients to only the CommServe server and MediaAgents that the clients actually communicate with.
Although each client in an infrastructure group communicates only with the MediaAgents and CommServe computer that are defined by the storage policies associated with its subclients, standard network topologies create routes to all MediaAgents and the CommServe computer in the group. A smart network topology, on the other hand, prevents the creation of unnecessary routes between clients, MediaAgents, and the CommServe computer.
You can create a smart network topology for one-way direct connections, two-way direct connections, and connections via a network gateway.
Note
You cannot perform certain advanced configurations (for example, incoming tunnel port, additional open port) on smart network topology client groups (explained below). Instead, you must perform these configurations at the client level or at the client group level.
Procedure
From the appropriate client group list, under the sub-heading Smart Group, select one of the following smart network topology options that will initiate connections:

You can select an option from only one client group. For example, suppose you are creating a smart network topology for a one-way direct connection. In the Add topology dialog box, you can select an option from either the Servers list or the DMZ servers list, but not both.

My CommServe. Represents the CommServe computer.
When you select this option as a client group, the system creates routes by considering the CommServe computer as one end of the route (based on the type of topology being created).

My MediaAgents. Represents all MediaAgents that the involved clients have a storage policy associated with.
When you select this option as a client group, the system determines all MediaAgents that each client in the other group can possibly communicate with (using the storage policy associations for the clients), and then creates routes based on the type of topology being created.
Note
Only MediaAgents associated with the primary copy are considered.

My CommServe AND MediaAgents. Represents a combination of the previous two options.
When you select this option as a client group, the system determines the CommServe computer as well as all MediaAgents that each client in the other group can possibly communicate with (using the storage policy associations for the clients), and then creates routes based on the type of topology being created.

Only MediaAgents associated with the primary copy are considered.
