Laptop Local USB Backups

Updated

Many laptop users have large amounts of data to back up but have a bandwidth limitation. To overcome this limitation, laptop users can protect their data by using portable Universal Serial Bus (USB) disks so that they can access the data whenever required.

The USB backup feature is useful in the following scenarios:

  • The backup data on the USB disks is encrypted and is accessible only to the laptop owners.

  • Backup over the network is not required.

  • The backed up data requires local protection and must be accessible for restores from the Command Center.

  • In a low bandwidth situation in which you need to recover a large amount of data from a laptop that has been replaced, upgraded, or is no longer available.

  • You want the laptop to automatically discover the attached USB storage device for data protection and data recovery operations.

Backing up laptops to the USB disks requires that you assign ownership for laptop clients and associate a storage policy.

We recommend that you automate backups and create an Auxiliary Copy to create standby copies of data in the USB drive.

Administrators Guidelines for Laptop Configuration

You can create a workflow to automate the following manual steps:

  1. Install the Laptop and MediaAgent packages.

Optional: You can also use a Laptop Registration Workflow to register the laptop client to the CommCell Console.

  2. Configure a PnP (Plug and Play) disk library.

  3. Create a storage policy.

Follow the instructions in the wizard.

Alternatively, download the Configure_PnP_Laptop workflow from the Commvault Store, and execute it from the CommCell Console.

End-User Guide for Accessing Backup Data

End-users use the Command Center for accessing the backup data. For more information, see Command Center - Overview.
